The Philippine Dragon Boat Federation won their first Gold in the 10th International Dragon Boat Racing Championship in Tampa, Florida. The champion team is headed by team captain Usman Anterola and composed of a 26-man team mixed of paddlers from the Philippine Army, Navy Air Force and Coast Guards personnel, and reinforced by the best civilian women paddlers. They represented our country against powerhouses Hungary, Australia, Italy and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Filipino dragon boat paddlers landed First place during the first heat with a time of 4 minutes and 59 seconds. Australia finishes second and Hungary comes third. Fellow countrymen used fast and strong strokes to gain a lead against their opponents and during the second heat, the team finished with a time of 4 minutes and 57 seconds setting a new world record for the event.
The first time I heard about them is through my sister whom attended a Press Conference few weeks ago to rally support for the Philippine Dragon Boat Team who is said to be back-to-back world champ yet struggles for funds and support from our government. Good thing, some of our fellow countrymen here and abroad lend their help and managed to gather all what they need to join the world championship dragon boat race. Ewan ko pro natuwa talaga ako nung nagtweet si Derek Ramsey na nanalo nga tayo. I still remember my sister din kasi habang nagko kwento sya nun, how the Team is asking for some help and support and prayers na manalo sila sa laban. Oh well, both of their hard work and preparation are now paid off!
Mabuhay kayo Pinoy Dragon Warriors! : )
